FOCUSING TRAINING SERIES:

The Focusing Training series is an integrated, four-level  program designed to teach you the Focusing skills that will enable you to continue benefiting from Focusing outside of the workshop structure, by being able to practice on your own with confidence, ease, and competence.

The program is not only integrated by building on your skills in a progressive manner, but also offers you a pool of teachers that cover the same curriculum and offer a consistent approach to teaching.

The specific approach to Focusing that you will learn in this series is called Inner Relationship Focusing and has been developed by Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin.  Both Ann and Barbara are internationally renowned for their teaching and for contributing the most in-depth Focusing Manual for learning and teaching Focusing.  This manual will be made available to you as you attend the series.

By studying the Inner Relationship model you will have the advantage of being able to complete the series with me or with Ann Weiser Cornell or any other Inner Relationship Focusing Trainer, if you so wished.  You will also be able to enter the Focusing Certification Program with Ann Weiser Cornell if you decide to pursue such a program (see below: Becoming Certified).

The Inner Relationship Training emphasizes a learning process that builds a sense of inner safety and acceptance, enabling you to listen and respond to your emotions and life-situations without feeling the need to give up, punish, or exile any aspects of your self.  Through the series you will learn to bring this attitude of self-acceptance and inclusion to your own inner process and to that of your Focusing partners.

The Inner Relationship Training series consists of four workshops: Level 1 to Level 4.  These workshops are what we feel you need to know to be able to use Focusing in a safe, responsible, and competent manner.  Below is a short description of each level.

Level 1: Encountering the Inner Relationship
We start by learning to turn inward with a gentle curiosity toward what we find inside ourselves: emotions, thoughts, memories, images, and physical sensations.  In Focusing we learn how to center our inner process on what we call a felt-sense, and how a felt-sense is different from an emotion, a thought, or a physical sensation, and yet it can arise from any of them.  We also learn basic partnership skills for exchanging Focusing sessions with peers.
Prerequisite: an introductory Focusing session with me or with any Inner Relationship Focusing Trainer.

Level 2: The Path of the Companion
Through a process we call “Leading in,” we learn how to begin a session by grounding in our bodies and building a sense of inner safety.  We then learn how to spend time with a felt-sense so as to follow its own emerging meaning and be receptive to the subtle discoveries and shifts that come from such inner listening.  We continue to learn how to be present to another’s process without needing to label, interpret, or fix their experiencing but rather aiding them in finding their own growth direction and sense-making.
Prerequisite: Level 1 with any Inner Relationship Focusing Trainer.

Level 3: The Guide’s Journey
We continue to deepen our understanding of the Focusing process by paying special attention to self-guiding sentences and inner moves that facilitate a sustained contact and processing of our inner experiences.  We also learn how to offer gentle guiding invitations to our Focusing partners, so as to facilitate their ability to bring curiosity, compassion, and kindness to their feelings and predicaments.
Prerequisite: Level 2 with any Inner Relationship Focusing Trainer.

Level 4: The Center of the Maze
In this workshop we learn how to work with difficult issues, such as blocks to actions, enduring patterns of self-criticism or sabotage, as well as overwhelming emotions or absent emotions.  We also learn how to be facilitative partners for Focusers who are working on difficult issues.  As we gain confidence in our ability to Focus, as Focusers and as Companions, we learn to let go of rules and make Focusing truly our own.
Prerequisite: Level 3 with any Inner Relationship Focusing Trainer.

Because the goal of the series is to support you in the practice of Focusing, we will make sure to discuss how you can join a local and international Focusing community.

STRUCTURE:

I offer each Level of the Focusing Training Series as either a weekend workshop or a 4-session tutorial.

Weekend workshops involve 12 hours of learning over a weekend.  Workshops are offered in the Rockridge district of Oakland CA, conveniently located near BART.

I also offer the same workshop material in tutorials for one or two or three people, as a 4-session series, each session to be scheduled one week apart. Sessions run between 2 and 2-1/2 hours depending on the number of participants. The advantage of the tutorial is that you can pick a schedule that works for you, while learning in an environment highly attuned to your needs and learning style.

We can schedule the sessions in person or by phone.
You may be hesitant to schedule your learning by phone.  I was too before I experienced that it does indeed work. Phone learning can save you tiring commutes or the extra energy required to leave your home or office to meet in person.  Or it can simply make the difference between learning Focusing or not, if no Focusing trainers are available in your area.

COST:
Cost of the Focusing Training Series includes The Inner Relationship Focusing Manual.

Each level workshop costs $200 or $180 if you register with one or two friends (your friends also pay $180).

The Cost of tutorials is as follow:
The tutorial for 1 or 2 people costs $250 each.
The tutorial for 3 people costs $215 each.

To schedule a tutorial Contact us Please not that to schedule a tutorial with two or three people you need to find those people yourself.
